Most of Jamaica’s bauxite is refined into alumina and the rest is exported unrefined. The marketing of bauxite and alumina is done by large international companies. The video below shows aspects of the bauxite mining and refining process undertaken by Alcoa in Jamaica and elsewhere. This video shows details of the bauxite refining process. Trends in the Jamaican Bauxite Industry. The future ...
Alumina Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) has its bauxite mining and alumina processing plant located at Nain, St. Elizabeth, in the south of Jamaica. The company was first established in the early 1960s under the union of three companies (Anaconda, Kaiser Aluminum and Reynolds Metals). Since then it has undergone several partnership and ownership changes, the last of which took place in 2017 ...
Alcan built the first alumina processing plant near its mines at Kirkvine, Manchester, and in early 1952 began shipping alumina from Port Esquivel. This was the beginning of the industry in Jamaica. After the first shipment of bauxite from Jamaica in 1952, production increased rapidly, and by 1957 Jamaica had become the leading bauxite producer in the world, with a production capacity of ...

01/05/1992 Thus, Jamaica and Guyana are particularly appropriate case studies for examining the impacts of increased bauxite processing because they are both major producers of the ore, and therefore the industry plays a major role in their economies, and the industry in both countries can be fairly described as significantly lacking domestic processing of bauxite before export. In addition,
An increasing concern is the loss of habitat for Jamaica’s unique plant and animal species; also bauxite mining severely affects the water retention capability of the soil. The Jamaica mining act of 1947 requires mines to remove top soil before mining, and restore it as part of the reclamation process. Two other environmental impacts of great concern is dust and caustic soda contamination ...
Noranda Bauxite exports more than 5 million dry metric tons of Bauxite from Jamaica per year. Jamaica is one of the top six countries for bauxite reserves and has been mining bauxite for more than 50 years. We mine high-quality bauxite for the global alumina market and for the cement industry. Bauxite, a sedimentary rock with a high aluminum content, is the world's leading aluminum source ...

Alcan (now Rio Tinto) has had a long history in Jamaica, constructing two alumina refineries there in the 1950s. In 2001 Alcan sold its bauxite mining and alumina plants in Jamaica but kept responsibility for many of the bauxite residue sites with the intention of safely remediating them to an agreed standard and transferring ownership to the Government of Jamaica.

However, in 2017, the bauxite mining and aluminium processing plant was fully transferred to JISCO, hence the name change. JAMALCO JAMALCO is an alumina plant located in Clarendon. Initially, the company only exported the rare bauxite ore to the United States. However in 1972, nine years after its inception, the company made its first shipment of alumina after the construction of its refinery ...

The Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI), a Government agency, is charged with overseeing the development of the industry and as such, standards fall under its purview. In 1990 the JBI established an Environmental Technical Committee comprising members from the bauxite/alumina companies and the government agencies responsible for environmental regulation and management.
